The Academy Awards and Social Media

It’s the 95th Academy Awards! Will you be watching?? It will be a tough call as The Last of Us will be airing at the same time and we all know….Pedro Pascal is this Pod’s favorite mushroom killing antihero. However, it seems like the Academy knew it had to change and it included some blockbuster titles amongst the movies nominated for Best Film of the year this time (Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of the Water). Here is the link to the full nominees and awards: https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2023. I hope you guys take a look and predict who will win (even if you didn’t see all the films, it still can be a fun party game to guess), here are my predictions for the major awards:

  • Actor in a Leading Role: Brendan Fraser, The Whale
  • Actor in a Supporting Role: Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • Actress in a Leading Role: Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • Actress in a Supporting Role: Jamie Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • Directing: The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg
  • Best Picture: Everything Everywhere All at Once

If you see a trend in my predictions it’s cause movies lately have lacked imagination and honestly, don’t give credit to audiences for appreciating smart, creative, non-traditional (in any sense) films. Let’s just hope no one gets smacked this year on public television.

Nicole is back! And she talks about the hazards of social media on young teens and children. We all know social media is here to stay, but there are ways to combat the negative side effects from too much social media. HINT- put down the phones and go outside, go to the library, read, do sports, volunteer! Ok, here are the links to the reports we discussed:  https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2023/02/social-media-body-image?mibextid=Zxz2cZ and https://www.healthline.com/health-news/first-aid. Apparently Nicole spends way too much time on social media and I spend very little time unless it’s looking at bag reviews. But we all agreed that social media is a slippery slope and can be dangerous for your mental well being sometimes.
