SPOILER ALERT: we like candy and guessed all of them.
đ Happy Halloween from the MCPL Podcast! Blindfolds, Candy, and Total Chaos đ
Hey there, candy fiends and Halloween lovers! đ»
We highly recommend you watch this weekâs episode of the Middle Country Public Library Podcastâbecause this one? This one is visually chaotic in the best way. But if you’re just reading along or listening in the car (safely, we hope), don’t worryâwe’ve got you.
This Halloween episode was extra special: it was our first-ever video Halloween special AND it featured a blind taste test of classic Halloween candy. Spoiler: it was as hilarious as it was sugary. đŹ
So picture this: Sal is dressed as a slice of pizza. Sara and Nicole are blindfolded and fumbling their way through a lineup of Americaâs most beloved (and occasionally controversial) candy bars. There are bowls, mystery treats, trivia, and a lot of, âWaitâwhat is this??â
Letâs break it down, candy by candy:
đ« 1. Kit Kat
We kicked things off easy. That iconic snap? Dead giveaway.
âIs it a Kit Kat?â
âYup. Been training for this my whole life.â
Fun Fact: Kit Kat was invented in 1935 in England and later licensed in the U.S. by Hershey. Each piece is technically called a finger. Youâre welcome.
đ„ 2. Butterfinger
This one stirred a little controversy.
âThey changed the recipe… itâs not as good anymore.â
âNot a big Butterfinger fan.â
Still, they guessed it instantly. Shout-out to Bart Simpson for making Butterfinger the candy of the â90s.
đ„đ« 3. Reeseâs Peanut Butter Cup
The shape gave this one away immediately.
âCheers… we both know what this is.â
âReeseâs. Mini, obviously.â
H.B. Reese, a former Hershey employee, started his own candy company in 1928… and then got bought right back into the Hershey fam. Classic.
đ 4. Sour Patch Kids
Sara almost guessed âSwedish Fish,â but that sour kick sealed the deal.
âSour Patch Kids!â
âYou know what theyâre called in France? Very Bad Kids.â
âThatâs amazing.â
Also, they were originally called Marsmen in the â70s. Wild.
đ„„ 5. Almond Joy
Cue the division.
âI donât want it.â
âWhy not?â
âCoconut. Nope.â
But Nicole took one for the team and guessed it right. Almond Joy: invented by six Armenian immigrants in 1919, loved by 80% of the U.S. military in the 1940s.
đ 6. Snickers
Salâs favoriteâand a global best-seller.
âOne, two, three…â
âSnickers!â
Did you know it was named after the Mars familyâs favorite horse? Thatâs sweet… and also, slightly concerning. đŽ
đ« 7. Three Musketeers
A little confusion here:
âMilky Way?â
âWait… no. Three Musketeers!â
Originally, these bars came with three flavorsâchocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Thatâs why they were called Three Musketeers. But sugar rationing during WWII left us with just chocolate.
đ„ 8. Payday
The wildcard.
âIt’s like peanut brittle? Not chocolatey…â
âPAYDAY!â đ
This old-school bar (introduced in 1932) ditches the chocolate for straight-up peanuts and caramel. There’s now a chocolate version tooâbecause why not?
đŹ Final Thoughts: Sugar, Laughs, and a Whole Lotta Trivia
Throughout the episode, between bites and blindfolds, we dropped candy facts, nostalgia, and plenty of laughs. Sara and Nicole crushed the guessing game (even if coconut betrayed them), and we all left with a sugar high and newfound candy knowledge.
So whether youâre a Milky Way loyalist or a sour fiend, thereâs one thing we can all agree on: Halloween is the perfect excuse to raid the candy aisle… for research purposes, of course.
Watch the full episode for the full visual chaosâand maybe grab a snack while youâre at it. đ
Happy Halloween from all of us at MCPL!
