Honoring the Legacy: 25 Years Since September 11, 2001
In a special commemorative episode of the Middle Country Public Library Podcast, Sal and Jim reflect on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Rather than focusing on imagery, we dedicate the episode to discussing the timelines, historical context, and incredible acts of bravery that defined that fateful day.
The Timeline of Events
On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists associated with Al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airliners to execute coordinated suicide attacks:
- Flight 11 & Flight 175: Both transcontinental flights departing from Boston Logan Airport were redirected into the World Trade Center towers in New York City—Flight 11 into Tower 1 at 8:46 AM, and Flight 175 into the South Tower at 9:03 AM.
- Flight 77: Originating from Dulles International Airport, this flight struck the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, at 9:37 AM, killing 125 people on the ground.
- Flight 93: Departing from Newark, New Jersey, this fourth plane crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers launched an brave counterattack against the hijackers to prevent a strike on Washington, D.C.
Stories of Extraordinary Courage
The episode highlighted the selfless heroic acts of first responders and everyday civilians alike:
- First Responders: A total of 343 firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, and 37 Port Authority officers made the ultimate sacrifice.
- Stairwell B Miracle: Firefighters from Ladder 6 refused to leave Josephine Harris, a civilian struggling to descend the stairs. When the North Tower collapsed, the small stairwell section between the 2nd and 4th floors remained miraculously intact, saving their lives.
- The Red Bandana: 24-year-old trader Welles Crowther saved multiple lives in the South Tower Sky Lobby by guiding survivors to an open stairwell before returning upward to help more.
- United Flight 93: Passengers including Todd Beamer (“Let’s roll”) and Thomas Burnett Jr. organized a revolt against the hijackers, preventing further catastrophic destruction in the nation’s capital.
Commemorative Exhibit at Middle Country Public Library
To honor the anniversary, the library’s Centereach branch lobby is hosting a special historical exhibit through September 17th. Visitors can view authentic uniforms, gear, and tools used by first responders at Ground Zero, providing a moving local tribute to our nation’s history.
